Anne Barbour is a gifted writer. Her characters are very well drawn and this particular story moved along fairly well. The heroine, Helen Prestwick, is a strong women who has a past which won't be revealed until quite a ways into the book. We know she's brave because she's come all the way from Portugal with a small cute package with only a female companion accompanying her to face down the Earl of Camberwell and his relatives.

If that doesn't get your curiosity going, the next statement might. The package is Helen's nephew - Baby William, the rightful Earl of Camberwell. Problem is, there's already an Earl of Camberwell - that would be William's father's cousin - Edward, whom everyone assumed was the rightful heir since the previous Earl - Edward's cousin, Charles, died while serving in the war on the Peninsula. It seems that Helen's sister and Charles kept their marriage a secret from everyone except for the Prestwick family. Furthermore, Helen has no proof of the marriage.

Because Edward is an ethical man who never really desired to be the earl, he's willing to provide Helen and her companion a home until he is able have Charles' marriage researched. We soon realize Helen has a unique gift. She's been trained - presumably by her father to appraise and repair art works - seemingly all sorts - paintings, statues, urns, goblets, figurines - you name it. Because the Camberwell estate has loads of art stored in dusty rooms, Edward puts Helen to work restoring and cataloging the treasures.

There are minor characters - the dowager countess, her daughter - both of whom fall in love with William because he looks just like Charles. There's also the dowager's villainous brother who sees Helen as a type of threat and works against her until finally there is a big showdown. During the showdown, parts of Helen's past which was heretofore only referred to throughout the book is fully revealed resulting in Helen's and Edward's burgeoning friendship becoming strained.

Although I felt the author spent way too much time following the big showdown with details of Helen's mental analysis of everything that went awry, eventually the story picks back up and we begin to see a resolution in sight.

Not an exciting story, but it did hold my interest throughout. Edward was a good man who thought he would never find true love and had resigned himself to reading his books by the fireplace. Into his life, the bright, brave, luscious Helen comes. Nice romance.

Miss Prestwick Crusade edition by Anne Barbour Romance eBooks Reviews

Well written & entertaining! A pleasant read when I am eager to visit long-ago England.
I actually enjoyed the whole story but the ending was a little too quickly finished and left me wishing... for something.
This was a lovely, satisfying regency. The plot was interesting and the characters were a delight. The writing was as well-done as I have come to expect from this author. The heroine was easy to identify with and her Hero was a true paragon. Very highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.
A fantastic read. I adored Edward!! He was my favorite type of hero. The story was very well written.
Anne Barbour creates believable plots that are well thought out and planned. I always enjoy her books, and they're always a clean read.
I enjoyed this story and the story line was easy to follow. The author drew the reader in and allowed us to experience her characters many emotions. What to say about this story, it was delightfully written and the hero was one of a kind. It's a shame her father didn't show up at the end to make amends. The story had intrigue, suspense, thievery, and romance. I love reading books from this author.
I've read a number of this author's books over the past few days and this was by far the one I enjoyed least. I think it's mainly down to the fact that I didn't like the h very much. I found that she came along all guns blazing to get her nephew recognised as the Earl in place of the H, without any kind of sensitivity towards the H and his family despite him being the perfect gentleman and taking her claims seriously. I didn't like that she immediately began referring to him as Mr Beresford instead of by his title - she showed him no respect. All of her claims still had to be proven and who was she to decide that he was merely a mister? Then throughout she was hot and cold with the H and he was so nice towards her all of the time. Honestly by the end I just didn't care anymore.
Not my favorite by Ms. Barbour, but not terrible, either, and overall it was a nice story.

I think the h was properly "militant" for the sake of her nephew, whom she loved very much, and wanted to see get what was due him as his late father's legitimate heir.

I really liked the H.

But there was a lot of "tell," vs. "show," and I found myself skipping sections, and I thought the story dragged on a bit too long.

There was mystery and a touch of villainy in the story and those elements were interesting but not pulled off all that well.

Would I recommend? Yes, because some of what I disliked was just my own preference, vs. truly a problem, and so I think most people who like traditional Regency romance will appreciate this one.
